Cheese, Deli Meat and Mushrooms Links to 24 Listeria illnesses

Cheese: As of September 28, 2022, six people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from six states. Sick people’s samples were collected from August 6, 2017, to August 5, 2022. Sick people range in age from 56 to 83 years, with a median age of 78, and 67% are female. Five people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.

State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the month before they got sick. Of the five people interviewed, four (80%) reported eating brie or camembert cheese. Most people did not remember the brand of the cheese they ate, but one person reported eating Lidl Premium Brand Brie. Old Europe Cheese is the only manufacturer of Lidl Premium Brand Brie.

USDA Proposes Expanded Food Choices, Increased Access to Infant Formula under WIC Program

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is proposing changes to the foods prescribed to participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). These science-based revisions incorporate recommendations from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025. FNS is proposing changes to align the program’s food packages with the latest nutrition science and support equitable access to nutritious foods during critical life stages.

Taken collectively, the changes will increase the current level of assistance while providing WIC state agencies with more flexibility to tailor the packages to accommodate personal and cultural food preferences and special dietary needs and increase variety and choice for WIC participants, making the program more appealing for current and potential participants.

FDA Releases Food Traceability Final Rule

Earlier this month, FDA announced finalization of its food traceability rule, which the agency says is designed to more effectively trace contaminated food through the food supply, whether sourced in the U.S. or abroad.

The final rule establishes additional food traceability recordkeeping requirements for those that manufacture, process, pack, or hold certain foods, including fresh leafy greens, nut butters, fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, and ready-to-eat deli salads. In collaboration with industry, FDA says it will be able to more rapidly and effectively identify the origin and route of travel of certain contaminated foods to prevent or mitigate foodborne illness outbreaks, address credible threats of serious adverse health consequences or death, and minimize overly broad advisories or recalls that implicate unaffected food products.
