Smok’n Blues BBQ is a family affair. Husband and wife team James and Lupita Cocroft have been catering BBQ in Southern California since 2017. While Smok’n Blues BBQ serves up BBQ favorites like tri-tip, ribs and bacon macaroni and cheese, they also provide Mexican-inspired corn on the cob and bacon wrapped hot dogs. Often joined by their 3 children, the couple utilizes James’ recipes and their passion for people to ensure their customers receive the best possible food and service.

What inspired you to get into foodservice?

“Bringing the family together for special occasions always revolves around food. When people started asking for our food, we just enjoyed being a small part in other people’s big days! It has also brought our family closer as we are a small family-owned business.”

What do you love about your business?

What do you love about your business?
“The reward is always those quiet minutes when you can’t hear guests talking—only people working on their plates. It makes for a priceless reward!”

What’s the most interesting thing to happen to your business?

“We have fired up the BBQ in the rain and fed guests in the middle of a thunderstorm. It wasn’t the most ideal setting, but definitely a memorable one!”

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?

“It’s been tough balancing everyday life with school aged kids, a full time employed father and PTA-active mom, and yet, we have managed to keep our business open and thriving even after COVID brought business to a standstill.”

Which Cambro products help make your business work?

“The Cam GoBox is definitely my favorite container!! When my husband can’t assist in a cater or drop off, as he works 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, we pack all the delicious bbq in Cambro GoBoxes, which I am able to move by myself. They make my job so much easier! During catered events, Cambro always has our back (literally) on standby within hands reach from our buffet line!”
